Everything HIVHope International does
is directed by these values.
is directed by these values.
- It’s about people! Not just facts, numbers, disease, medicines.
- We believe in the value and abilities of each Individual.
- Human life is of great value.
- Hope is key to HIV education and ministry.
- Focusing on the future is central.
- Motivation is essential. People must be motivated to apply what they learn.
- Biblical principles guide everything we say and do.
- Community has a major impact on the choices people make. Decisions do not occur in a vacuum: there are external pressures/expectations and sources of influence that may be positive or negative, healthy or unhealthy. There are cultural norms, perceived and actual norms, and relationships with peers, family, and friends that all play a role. Taking the whole community into account and using the strengths that exist there will enrich and reinforce efforts.
- Respect for culture - Every culture needs to change in some ways, but outsiders can’t make those changes.
- Cooperation – We cannot do it alone, but only in cooperation with others.
- Stigma must not just be overcome. It must be replaced with friendship, compassion, hope and the understanding that HIV is not a judgment from God.
- Nationals can do far more than outsiders including being better educators. HIVHope’s role is to equip and EMPOWER.
- Accurate information is vital.
- Myths must be corrected.
- Influencing behavior includes both reinforcing healthy behaviors and changing risky ones.
- Many do not understand (or trust) science. So methods of communication need to be developed that do not depend on the audience’s understanding of or belief in science. This includes avoiding reliance on (in some cases even the use of) scientific terms and concepts.
