Duane Crumb’s book is now available. After 21 years in HIV prevention education and two years writing and editing, you can now receive your copy. 2008: Marathi translation now available.

Written primarily as a resource to people in developing countries who are involved in HIV prevention, the book contains the insights, information, and understandings gained from studying and teaching this subject in 38 states and more than a dozen trips to Africa and Asia.

The longest chapter in the book is answers to questions that are asked around the world. Duane’s belief is that the right answer to any question about HIV and AIDS must meet three tests. In addition to being accurate, the answer must also be adequate (with enough information to be understood and believed) and appropriate (to the specific audience).
Other highlights of the book focus on:

· The importance of motivation over just information in slowing the spread of HIV,

· The use of positive motivation (hope) rather than just fear,

· The essential attitude of valuing people and helping them value themselves and their future,

· Being clear on the audience being targeted with HIV prevention and tailoring the message to that group while not ignoring others you will be addressing,

· Overcoming obstacles including gender inequality, a lack of understand of cause and effect relationships, cultural barriers to making choices, etc.

· The importance of not just changing risk behaviors, but reinforcing healthy behaviors,

· Focusing not only on prevention but emphasizing overcoming stigma and discrimination too often suffered by those living with the virus.
